In 1 Corinthians 12, the apostle Paul teaches that the church is the body of Jesus and each person is a member that makes up the body (v. 27). Not members like, "Hey, I'm a member of Costco so I get these privileges," but rather members like, “My arm is a member of my body and my body needs my arm to do arm things." We were made to belong to one another and to God as part of a greater whole (v. 12-13). In his love, God arranges the body with many parts (v. 18) so that we are not divided from one another or from him (v. 25).
Everyone who has believed in Jesus, repented from their sin, and been baptized into his death and resurrection is a member of the body of Christ, the church. Being a member of City of Light is finding a home in this local embodiment of Jesus’ universal church.
The Corinthian church had a hard time committing to one another. Our culture has a hard time committing to anything at all. Becoming a member is joining the team of disciple-makers. A team has members, but a team also has a mission. This is an opportunity for us as a church to take a next step in committing to the Lord, one another, and the mission he’s given us to find a new day in Jesus, a new home in his church, and a new heart for our neighbors.
All are welcome at City of Light, whether they go through the membership process or not. Anyone can join a group, serve on many of the teams, give, receive pastoral care, etc. Membership is an invitation to commit to one another and the Lord to build up this local church together to see it grow and flourish in the years ahead.
Our hope through membership is to provide an opportunity for everyone to enter into deeper partnership at City of Light.
