Parish Council Nominations

  •   March 11, 2020

The Parish Council is a team of men and women at City of Light who provide prayerful oversight of church resources and support for the Pastor and staff. Each year some members complete a term and new members are nominated to serve a 3 year term. A Parish Council member will be a person of character and prayer who has already shown a commitment to our church through serving and membership.

To nominate someone for parish council, email The Parish Council will review the nominations, choose one final nominee for each opening, release that nominee slate on April 26 for the congregation to give input. At a Parish Meeting on Sunday, May 3, from 12pm - 12:30pm, all are welcome to hear nominees share their testimony and members will vote on their approval.

The Parish Council provides prayerful oversight of church resources and support for the pastor and staff. A Parish Council member will be:

  1. A Person of Character: Someone whose life exhibits the likeness of Jesus and the fruit of the Spirit.

  2. A Person of Prayer: Someone with a deep commitment to prayer and a practice of fasting and discernment.

  3. A Person of Service: Someone who is a committed member of City of Light and is already involved in ministry and generosity.

Parish Council members serve 3-year terms that are staggered so that each year new members are added and old members cycle off, providing both continuity and new leaders with fresh input. Here is the process:

  1. The congregation submits nominations for the Parish Council.

  2. Through a discernment process the current Parish Council will review nominations, interview some of the nominees, then choose one nominee for each open position on the council.

  3. Those final nominees will be communicated to the congregation prior to the Parish Meeting to give an opportunity for feedback. Any input can be sent to

  4. At the Parish Meeting, members of the congregation will have the opportunity to vote for the nominee group.

The apostle Paul teaches that aspiring to leadership is a good thing (1 Timothy 3:1). Our leadership pathway at City of Light begins with serving on a team or joining a group, giving generously, apprenticing as a leader, and then joining a leadership team. We encourage all of our leaders to keep the sabbath. Becoming a member is also a way to take more ownership and responsibility in our life together and is required for some serving and leading opportunities. Join us for the explore membership retreat on Saturday, September 28 to find out more about committing to membership. If you would like to take one of these steps, please reach out to a team or group leader or a pastor.
