Memorizing Psalms as a Family

  •   June 07, 2017

Our City Kids are memorizing Psalm 95 this summer as part of our Praying the Psalms series. The Church has used Psalm 95 for ages as an invitation into prayer and worship because it declares the glory of God and invites us to worship him with all our hearts. Join us in memorizing Psalm 95 or another Psalm as a family this summer!

Memorizing a Psalm as a family is a great way to engage the Psalms at home. Family meals, car rides, walks, and devotions are all good times to practice memorizing together. Begin with dividing the Psalm into smaller sections to memorize

Then incorporate different ways of memorizing:

  • Draw small pictures above each phrase on a poster
  • Create motions to act out with the Psalm
  • Hang the Psalm text around the house
  • Write the Psalm out on several 3x5 cards and scramble the phrases around
  • Create a tune for the Psalm
  • Create a craft or drawing of the Psalm

As you memorize as a family, spend time wondering with your kids what God is saying to us in the text.

Psalm 95 Memorization Plan

Below is Psalm 95, taken from the Book of Common Prayer, along with the memorization plan we're following in City Kids. Follow along with us and invite your kids to continue reviewing during the week!

Come, let us sing to the Lord; *
let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving *
and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God, *
and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of the earth, *
and the heights of the hills are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it, *
and his hands have molded the dry land.

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, *
and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For he is our God,  and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. *
Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!
